Rebecca Day, from Braunstone Town, had part of her scalp singed and hair melted by a fake pair of GHD straighteners.

Leicestershire County Council Trading Standards has seized 40 counterfeit straighteners so far this year.

They warned some could reach 285C, hot enough to melt human hair.

‘Very convincing’

Miss Day said she received her straighteners as a birthday present. “They singed my hair and ripped it away from the roots. I was in agony.

“I had no reason to believe the straighteners were fake as the website said they were an approved retailer and the pictures looked very convincing.”

David Bull, the county council’s head of trading standards, said people should take care when buying straighteners.

“Always buy electrical products from a reputable dealer and check all paperwork and guarantees,” he said.

“Rebecca’s experience highlights the danger posed by counterfeit hair straighteners.”

However, Council will now pay $2.2 million – not the original price tag of $3.3 million.

This follows a decision at yesterday’s Council meeting.

The vote was locked at 3-all until Deputy Mayor Cr Rogin Taylor used his casting vote.

Mayor Mike Brunker declared an interest and left the room during the discussion about the purchase.

GHD Straighteners consultants released the final community consultation report to councillors on Monday but the report has not yet been released to the public.

The discussion about the report was on the agenda for yesterday’s meeting as part of the closed session – meaning the public and the media were not going to hear the debate or the decision about the Havengrand land.

However, councillors voted unanimously early in the meeting to move the item into the open session.

Cr Taylor said the GHD report revealed 84.9 per cent of people believed a new multi-purpose sport and recreation complex was needed.

He also said the survey found 66.5 per cent favoured a site between Proserpine and Centro.

Cr Jennifer Whitney voted against the purchase and was less than impressed with the way it was handled.

“I totally want a green field space but I believe the way we have handled this has been in the worst possible way,” she said.

Havengrand shareholder Tony Price said shareholders made a decision to lower the price once community consultation had already begun.

“In three years time the people of the Whitsundays will say what a great decision council has made,” he said.

Whitsunday resident Peter Chengody has been lobbying against the purchase of a new sports park from the start of talks.

“I am devastated for the people of the township of Whitsundays,” he said.

Warning over fake hair straighteners

The Ruben Blades Hairdressing Academy inadvertently bought a batch of fake ghd brand straighteners from China before selling them in Christchurch.

The academy had an advertisement in last Saturday’s Press recalling the straighteners.

A Sydney ghd spokeswoman said the company asked the academy to contact customers who bought a fake styler.

“It was found that Ruben Blades Hairdressing was distributing counterfeits and they have been helpful working with ghd to inform their customers of this,” she said.

“Ghd requested that the salon notify each customer of the fake purchase, and this is something that is taken very seriously, considering the safety issues of a fake electrical appliance.”

Academy director Eelco Wiersma said he believed the straighteners were genuine when he bought them.

He was given a certificate to show their authenticity.

“They were not genuine articles, so I had to recall them.

“I just made an error of judgment.”

Wiersma said there were many “knock-off” hair straighteners sold in New Zealand.

“I didn’t want to be caught up, so I am giving people their money back.”

Ghd said the academy was not authorised to sell its products.

The ghd spokeswoman said counterfeit hair stylers were easy to buy online.

“Counterfeit ghd stylers are an international issue for ghd. “Ghd is doing their utmost in combating this issue.

“There are ways to spot a counterfeit website and it’s safe to say that any Chinese website selling ghds is likely to be a fake.”

Heavily discounted ghd stylers were also likely fakes and potentially “a safety issue” for users, the spokeswoman said.

Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin said people should take advantage of the recall.

“If they’re knock-offs, they could be unsafe because these things heat up quite considerably and very quickly, so you don’t want a dangerous set.”

They smashed the windows of Hair Express in Seaview Road, Colwyn Bay, causing £2,500-3,000 worth of damage.

It’s the second time this year the hairdressers on Seaview Road in Colwyn Bay has been targeted after vandals broke the windows in February.

Wendy Ibbotson manages the salon, which is run by Regis, and said the damage had severe repercussions to the business during tough times.

“Sometime on Boxing Day night or early December 27 thieves put the windows through and stole all the GHD straighteners sale,” she said.

“Retail-wise it has cost us around £1,400. It will hit us hard as we’ve been struggling anyway.

“We are going to have to wait until well into the new year before we get any more straighteners in, so we’ve lost trade.

“To be honest I think it is opportunistic, someone has seen them on the shelf and gone in to get them and they are such a popular product they will be easy to sell on fairly quickly.

“It is a big inconvenience, the boarding-up really makes the shop look unsightly and uninviting to clients.

“So we are just waiting to see if anything comes up on the CCTV footage.”

As well as the loss of trade, Wendy explained the windows themselves were very expensive to replace.

“We had a window put through earlier in the year, so it is the second time in months. The windows are special toughened safety glass to stop them falling in on anybody so they are very expensive to replace.

“So we are probably looking at £2,500 to £3,000 to replace them on top of the straighteners and the loss of trade.”

Unfortunately, Amanda Sellek from Essex fell for what she thought were some bargain GHD hair straighteners. She found a site selling them for half the price you’d usually pay and was chuffed she’d come across such a good deal. But after Amanda had used them for just a week the straighteners started to go wrong.

“One Saturday morning it burnt my hair which actually stuck to the ceramic plate, it took a chunk of my hair out. There was smoke everywhere.”

“It was a really good fake even down to the hologram. I went back to the website and clicked on ‘contact us’ and realised straight away that it was a dodgy company because there was no phone number or address, just an email address.

“It’s just the fact that they’re so dangerous. It could have really burnt my head.”

For Tony Neate, this case is frightening and dangerous. “You think you’re buying something from a UK store but it could be coming from anywhere in the world. You are not as protected buying goods from overseas as you are buying from the UK, so be careful.”

Pat Weaver from Worcester thought she was buying three pairs of trendy Ugg boots online as Christmas presents. The site she found included the word ‘sale’ in the web address. Prices were in US dollars so she thought the website was based in the US.

“I wanted to save some money. I knew clothes in America were cheaper so that was the site I bought them from.”

Just before her boots arrived Pat was upset to come across other customers on a web forum who’d ordered from the same site. These frustrated shoppers had also received fake goods or sometimes nothing at all. But it was too late for Pat who’d already paid. When her boots arrive they were just as she feared – cheap copies.

Tony Neate’s advice would be to do a bit of research before you buy. “Search on the internet to find out if anybody else had some stories about that particular website. One of the problems if you’re going to shop online is that you don’t necessarily know who you’re dealing with.”

Chris Probert from Cheshire bought a gift for his girlfriend from ‘ThePerfumeEmporium.co.uk’ website. As a regular internet shopper Chris reckons he’s quite web savvy.

ThePerfumeEmporium.co.uk was the top result when he searched for somewhere to buy the gift. He thought that meant they could be trusted; “That’s always an indicator to me that if it’s top of the list it must be reputable and reliable.”

When the perfume didn’t arrive Chris returned to the website to see if there was a way of getting hold of them – but again there was only an email address. Although a postal address has since been added to the site.

“I first realised something was wrong perhaps after one or two of the emails came back to me with an excuse about the delay. One of the guys at work suggested having a look on the internet and just seeing what reputation this business has got. So we did a few internet searches and found complaint after complaint after complaint.”

To date, Chris still hasn’t received the perfume or a refund.

The money isn’t the issue, it’s the whole principle of the thing – that someone can set themselves up as a business and take your money.”
