how-to-make-hair-flowers-out_1Hair accessories can make even the simplest of hairstyles look very attractive and fetching. But unfortunately the ones that we get in stores are very generic and you can find every second women sporting them. And the designer hair accessories for women are so exorbitantly priced that not everyone can purchase them. So the next best thing to do is to make your very own hair clips and barrettes. Floral hair accessories are all the rage this season and they look very attractive when pinned on hair. There are many materials that you can use for making floral hair accessories like hair bands and hair clips. One of the simplest hair accessories that you can make at home is flower hair clips. You can use materials like lace, fabric, satin and grosgrain ribbons for making exquisite hair clips. Here we are going to discuss all about making flower hair clips using different materials.

How to Make Flower Hair Clips Out of Fabric
To make the flower hair clip, first mark a 2 inch diameter, 1 ½ inch diameter and 1 inch diameter circle on the card paper. Now cut around these circles and keep them aside. Now place these circular templates on the silk fabric and mark them with a pencil. Cut out the fabric and keep aside. Now take the largest of the circular piece of fabric that you have just cut and divide the circle into six equal parts. Mark this with a pencil. Next with a sharp pair of scissors, cut into the markings making sure that you cut only two thirds from the edge of the circle.

Light a small candle and carefully hold the edge of the circular piece of fabric to the flame of the candle. Since the fabric is made of silk, the edges of the circle will wrinkle up and this will form the petals of the flowers. If the wrinkling is not uniform do not worry as this gives the flower a more natural look. Now repeat the entire process with the 1 ½ inch and 1 inch diameter circular silk fabric. Next assemble all the circular fabrics one over the other, starting from the largest to the smallest. Make sure that the petals are aligned in such a way that it looks natural and attractive. Sew each layer of the fabric together with the help of a thread and glue some pearl at the center of the silk flower. Attach a small piece of felt to the back of the flower and then attach the felt to the front surface of the snap clip. Allow the glue to dry. Your beautiful floral hair clip is ready to be worn.

Once again, Breezy Mama received a cry for help. Mama Tracy sent in a email which said, “I am definitely a boys’ mom and when I had my daughter I freaked out. Now she has this hair and I don’t know what to do with it!  (her hair is thin, white and tangles easily so even brushing it is a nightmare). Do you have any tips on the best ways to style her hair?” Breezy Mama turned to Donna Fishel, a hair stylist and Paul Mitchell educator for over 19 years, for help.

From Donna:

These are some ideas, based off the simple ponytail, that are cute, stylish and most importantly, that stay in. All techniques are good for fine, medium and coarse hair. First, it’s great to have these products on hand (all available on Paul Mitchell or by calling 1-800-321-5767):

I love washing my daughter’s hair with Paul Mitchell Baby Don’t Cry Shampoo–it’s made from the same PH as your child’s eye, so it’s guaranteed to not too sting. Also works as bubble bath.

Paul Mitchell Taming Spray: A leave-in detangler–spray in your child’s hair before combing out.

Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam: Put a quarter size into the palm of your hand and rub together until it turns into liquid. Rub into your daughter’s DRY hair for added control. Do this after you comb the taming spray through and before you start the hairstyle.

As well as: No Slip Plastic Bands (dime-sized), and small, plain “clip” barrettes.

Hairstyle #1: Pony tails and barrettes
Products to have on hand:
Dime sized plastic bands, soft spray by Paul Mitchell, and hairbrushes or combs.

1.    Stand behind your child.  Brush the section of hair from the front, to the back, towards you.

2.    Holding the hair in your hand, put the hair in a plastic band (dime sized) and twist around hair three times or until tight.

3.    Take the bottom part of the barrette clip and “sew” in and out of the hair. Finish by clipping the barrette around the dime sized ponytail band.  The sewing effect grips the hair for longer lasting holds and secures your barrette.

4.    Follow up with Paul Mitchell Soft Spray for any loose ends.

Hairstyle # 2: Half Ponytails

1.    Separate the hair, along the center of the head, from the front to the back making two even sections.

2.    Standing behind your child, comb the hair from the front to the middle of the back, placing a dime sized plastic band, twice around the hair.  The third time, bring the hair only half way through leaving the hair in a loop effect with ends extending out.

3.    Spray with Paul Mitchell Soft Spray.

4.    Use the sewing technique for any hair accessories using the band as your anchor.

Inside out Ponytail:
1.    These go along the front hairline, ½ inch from the scalp using all the hair, one ponytail at a time, for a total of four to six ponytails starting from the left to the right.

2.     Standing behind your child, start with your first section on the left hand side. Take a section of hair ½ inch back and ½ inch wide, and ponytail the section with the dime sized ponytail holder about 3/4  way down the ponytail (approximately 2 to 3 inches from the scalp).

3.    Place your finger in between the bottom of the ponytail, closest to the scalp, separating it.

4.    Pull the top of the ponytail through the separation from the front to the back, with the tail ending at the back.

5.    Then tighten to scalp

6.    Follow up with Paul Mitchell Soft Spray.

7.    Add any hair accessories with the sewing technique.

8.    If bobby pins are needed criss-cross the bobby pins one having the sewing technique for support of any hair accessories such as flowers.

9.    Your end result has a crown effect from left to right in the front.  Pretty for all occasions.
